Today we celebrate a very special day
It was one year ago today that Marc
delivered our friends Haris and Jasminka's son Edin.
It was so incredible to be in the delivery room and watch him being born. Both Haris and Jasminka's families are in Bosnia so we have made them part of our family and today,
we went to Symeon's Restaurant to celebrate Edin's first birthday.
I know that this is a food blog, but every now and then, you have to write about more important things and this is one of them.
Haris, Jasminka, and Edin celebrating his first birthday. Needless to say that his one of his present from his adopted grandparents was a little Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Since Marc can't have one, we thought he could live through Edin.
I'll give a quick review of the restaurant as well so
we'll have a tad of food news thrown in too.
Jasminka chose Symeon's for lunch today
It is a local Greek Restaurant that has been in business in Upstate New York for years and years. Symeon Tsoupelis Sr. and his wife Anne opened the restaurant in a very tiny spot on Oneida Street. They grew quite quickly, and moved to Genesee Street in the Village of New Hartford. Again, business was good and they expanded the third time, moving to their current location at 4941 Commercial Drive, Yorkville, New York (315) 736-4074.
They have survived every economic climate, a devastating fire a few years ago,
and they remain a mainstay in the Upstate area.
They will take a reservation for
parties greater than 6 people.
Symeon Sr. has since retired and the restaurant
is run by his son Symeon Jr.
and his wife Shelley. The food is always consistent and delicious.
The menu contains many Greek staples such as
Mousaka, Pasticho, Gyros, Souvlaki, Lamp Chops,
Psari Sto Filo, and a fabulous Greek Salad
made with their house dressing which is
oil and vinegar based seasoned with their
own spice mix Symeon's Spice Mix
which you can use on just about anything (and I do.)
Our favorites here are the Fried Calamari
and the Deep Fried Eggplant Melitzanes Tiganites appetizers
I love mine cut in thin strips and extra crisp and they
always accommodate whatever you want
The Souvlaki platter is always delicious,
and my personal favorite is the Psari Sto Filo
which is a delicious Haddock dish wrapped in
Filo dough with a mushroom, white wine cream sauce.
Edin is letting us know that he is enjoying his lunch
especially the pita bread which is available in both
a thin and thicker version
The desserts are traditional Greek desserts, rice pudding,
baklava, galaktoboureko
but they also have a praline which is a chocolate coated ice cream,
a great baklava cheesecake and their latest
addition, a baklava ice cream which is to die for!
Take it from us E & E (Elise and Edin)
You can never go wrong with a meal from Symeon's
If you are in the Upstate New York area,
it is worth exiting the New York State Thruway at Exit 31 just for the food
All in all, it was a very happy birthday!
That baby is just too, too, cute!
